2019, 07-27th & 28th Ironman 70.3 Ohio

This was my husband's race and I am his Sherpa-extraodinaire.
He was training for the Ironman Chattanooga and this race fell right in line with his training plan so he was going to use it as a test race to see where he was in preparation for the 140.6. He'd been working extremely hard with his training and - in my opinion - was very prepared.

Saturday, July 27th: We left bright and early in the morning to drive to Delaware, OH. My husband wanted to get a lay of the land, drive some of the course and see where we would be parking race morning. We got VERY lucky with regard to parking. On the race website there was a note about the Knights of Columbus selling parking sports in their lot. They only had 60 spots available and the time frame to purchase them was during a period when neither my husband nor I would have been near a computer. Special thanks for our friend Autumn who was home that morning and was able to snag one of these for us. It WAS right by the finish line.
We parked at a near by lot and then walked over the Athlete Village to get his race packet.
The town was decked out for this event!
The next thing we did was drive to the swim and BIKE OUT area. The athletes need to rack their bikes here today and then tomorrow morning will be bused up.
Even Sherpas need to stay hydrated!
We found an Olive Garden for dinner and it was my first time having zoodles (I know, I know...I'm late to the party) and this "discriminating eater" liked them!
Sunday, July 28th: Race Morning!
After dropping off some items in the stadium we made the short walk to the bus loading area.  There were 2 different lines: Athletes were allowed on the bus first and then if there was room a spectator could get on. My husband got on fairly quickly but I had to wait for about 30 minutes before there was room for me.

Once I arrived at the lake I was a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to find him. There are so many athletes and they aren't as recognizable since they aren't wearing street clothes. And obviously he doesn't have his cell phone with him!

This guy is 82!!!
Look closely, there is a banana in her back pocket.
I doubt is made it through the swim :)
So serious & nervous before the start...NOT!
This literally made me chuckle
A "swimming prohibited" sign at the swim start.
I caught him coming out of the swim and he didn't look happy. His finish time was slower than what he wanted it to be (I don't remember now by how much) and I would later learn that someone grabbed his leg in the water which caused a cramp and he had to pause and try to massage it out. No wonder he didn't have a happy face on!
Once he was off on the bike, it was time to stand in line for the buses back into town. Some people didn't pay attention the signs and were not in the correct bus line. Thankfully I got on one of the first buses out.

After I was dropped off in town, I went to the car to regroup. I took a loop around the area - first off looking for coffee - and then checked out all the farmer's market booths. Eventually I made my way back to the car again to have the lunch that I packed and sit in the shade.
Funny that many people thought this was a real horse
but it was a statue I saw when walking to the car.
When I got the last timing notification of the bike course, I got ready to walk back over to the stadium to see him ride in. If I remember correctly his bike time was faster than he thought it would be. I was hoping that would help his mindset.
The run  course has a section in the middle where the athletes make 2 loops so I knew that I could walk out there and see him once he completed the first loop and then have enough time while he was on the 2nd loop to get back into the stadium to see him finish.
HE CRUSHED IT!
He rested for a bit under a shade tree and then we went back to the hotel so he could shower. Since check out would be before he finished the race, we opted to reserve an extra night's stay - even though we planned on leaving soon after he showered. While he was still getting some things ready I went down to the front desk to turn in our keys and let them know we were going to go ahead and leave and NOT spend the night. They were very kind and only charged us for 1/2 day! I'm so glad I went down there to let them know.

2019, 07-14 Christmas in July Half Marathon

Several months ago I made a goal - after registering for the 2020 Indy Mini Half Marathon - to make the 2021 Indy Mini Half Marathon my 200th lifetime half marathon. Long story short, that goal was set aside because we are going to be taking an amazing anniversary trip this May and money needs to be saved for THAT. But in the meantime, I had already signed up for some half marathons that I didn't really ever want to do again just to get "numbers" toward 200.

Thus me doing this half marathon.

The start line changed from last year, it was once again HOT! (but it does take place in July so...) and aside from seeing friends there really isn't much to say about this race. I had no plans at trying to be competitive; it was merely only about finishing another half marathon so my finish time was slooooooow.

At one point in an effort to entertain myself while on the course, I thought it might be fun to try to find things along the way to create a "12 Days of Christmas / 12 Days of Christmas in July" list. I knew the last thing would be One Shiny Medal. But I thought of this AFTER I had seen some things that would have worked and to find 12 items and/or 11 items along the course was going to be rather challenging. So yeah, this didn't happen. I did get 3 boy scouts and five golden flowers for my 12 Days of Christmas in July list:
As I crossed the finish line i realized that there wasn't anyone handing out medals. Someone told me that I had to go over to some table and put my name on a list to get one later. Supposedly, the RD "brought the wrong box of medals" and he was at the the table hoping to convince some people to take last year's medals that he had extras of. He got a little irritated when some of us wouldn't agree to do that. Since I did this race last year, I already had last year's medal. A reliable source is pretty sure he was trying to save money and didn't order enough. I did get my medal a few weeks later in the mail.

Someone let me borrow their medal so that it would be in my Finisher's picture.

Pretty sure this will be the last time I do this half marathon. They offer a 5K as well but not sure I'd even do that distance.

2019, June - REWIND

June was a comfortably busy month.

JUNE 1st: I met a group of women downtown for a run and then brunch. I was confused about where I was supposed to park so I missed the official start of the run so I did my own thing and then caught up with them for the brunch portion of the morning.
JUNE 2nd: a friend of my husband's mentioned that they had a 6-week old barn owl that they were caring for until they could get it down to the Indiana Raptor Center where it will be part of the educational program there. We were invited to come out to see it if we wanted to.  YES, PLEASE!!! That was such a cool experience.

So majestic
JUNE 4th: I signed up for a Boot Camp class and this was our first morning. My friends Angela & Vee registered as well. And with a 5:30 AM start time its a good thing they are also attending because that will help keep me accountable. I'm not a fan of getting up that early. I did make it to the majority of the classes. It met every Tuesday & Thursday morning.
From our very first class (outside!)
to the last June class in the gym.
JUNE 5th: was Global/National Running Day and since this "holiday" always takes place on the first Wednesday in June it was also a Speedway Running Club night. I made personalized running bibs for the girls that I went to NOLA with and then some generic bibs for the rest of the club to have. The club was offering a discount on their membership so I finally became an official member.
JUNE 9th: was the SHE Power Half Marathon. You can read more about that here - SHE POWER Half Marathon

JUNE 13th: was the RUN(317) Broad Ripple race. While I'm not really a fan of the Broad Ripple area - streets are narrow, parking sucks - I did have fun on this course.
JUNE 17th: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPEEDWAY RUNNING CLUB!
SRC celebrated it's 4th birthday and we had a big pitch-in. Lots of people attended and it was so much fun.
The 3 of us each won a prize!
It was a NOLA reunion minus Esther.

JUNE 29th: This was the date of the 4th Indy Ultimate race.
I've participated all 4 years and you can read more about this year's experience here: Indy Ultimate
